Intensifying forest fires in Indonesia have triggered a significant deterioration in air quality throughout Southeast Asia. In Singapore, PM2.5 levels surged to 284 micrograms per cubic metre on Wednesday, marking the highest pollution reading recorded in the city-state this year. Meanwhile, authorities in Timor-Leste have ordered a three-day suspension of physical school classes starting October 15 to protect students from the hazardous atmosphere. The current wildfire season is the most severe Indonesia has faced in over a decade, exacerbated by dry weather patterns linked to the El Niño phenomenon. This regional haze has led to widespread health concerns, particularly regarding respiratory conditions, as smoke continues to drift across borders from the affected areas.
