Tomoko Akane, the President of the International Criminal Court, has formally requested that United Nations member states take a stand against punitive measures enacted by the United States. In her latest annual address, Akane emphasized that these sanctions pose a significant risk to the integrity of global judicial processes and the foundational principles of the rule of law. By targeting the court, she argued, Washington is undermining the collective efforts of the international community to uphold justice. The ICC leadership is now seeking broader diplomatic backing to ensure the institution remains shielded from political pressure and can continue its mandate without interference from external economic or legal threats.
