Iran’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, has formally protested US sanctions targeting 27 Iranian airlines. In a letter addressed to UN leadership, Darzi argued that these restrictive measures hinder access to critical aircraft components and maintenance services, thereby compromising civil aviation safety and endangering passengers. The diplomat asserted that these actions violate a 2018 International Court of Justice ruling that mandated the removal of obstacles to the export of essential aviation safety goods. Tehran characterized the sanctions as a form of economic terrorism and collective punishment, claiming they inflict unnecessary hardship on the civilian population. Consequently, Iran has urged the UN Security Council to encourage member states to reject these unilateral coercive measures, which the envoy maintains contravene the UN Charter and international human rights obligations.
