Galatasaray’s unbeaten start to the season ended Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to Sporting Lisbon in their Champions League opener. Despite taking an early lead through a Goncalo Inacio own goal, the Turkish side conceded three times to Geny Catamo, Luis Suarez, and Rodrigo Zalazar. This result extends Galatasaray’s poor record in European away matches, where they have secured only one victory in their last 16 attempts. The match also featured a hostile reception for Galatasaray forward Rafael Leao, who faced jeers from Sporting fans due to his controversial departure from the club in 2018. Although the defeat was disappointing, Galatasaray extended their streak of scoring in 40 consecutive European fixtures. The loss marks the first setback for Okan Buruk’s squad, which had previously enjoyed a strong run of form in the Turkish Super Lig.
