Moviegoers in Karnataka will face higher ticket prices starting September 30 due to a new state-imposed cess of up to 2%. The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has formally opposed this measure, arguing that it creates a "tax-on-tax" effect that contradicts the principles of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework. Industry leaders expressed concern that the additional levy will reduce the affordability of cinema for families and youth, potentially hindering efforts to boost theater attendance. While the exact impact on individual ticket costs remains unclear, the MAI stated that the move is counterproductive to government goals of tax rationalization and ease of doing business. The association plans to continue discussions with state officials to address these concerns and protect the long-term viability of the exhibition sector.
