The Kremlin has expressed skepticism regarding the potential resumption of natural gas exports to Europe via Ukraine, labeling such proposals as currently unfeasible. This response follows reports that the Trump administration had proposed a winter energy ceasefire involving the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to reduce European energy costs and provide transit revenue for Kyiv. The plan reportedly involved using a U.S. intermediary to manage payments via an escrow account to bypass sanctions. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that current conditions make such arrangements impossible, emphasizing that Russia is increasingly focusing on energy markets in the Global South. While European reliance on Russian gas has dropped significantly since the 2022 invasion, recent data indicates a slight uptick in imports during early 2026. The European Union maintains its objective to fully eliminate Russian energy imports by the end of 2027.
