From his current location in remand custody, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has formally petitioned President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In his correspondence dated October 9, Rajapaksa requested that the government implement tax relief measures for school supplies and basic food items within the 2027 fiscal budget. He specifically highlighted commitments made by the National People's Power party during the 2024 presidential campaign, which included promises to eliminate Value Added Tax on educational materials, stationery, and critical food products such as eggs and milk. Rajapaksa argued that these policy adjustments are necessary to alleviate the financial burden currently placed on low- and middle-income households. By urging the administration to honor these campaign pledges, the MP seeks to secure zero-percent VAT rates on essential goods to assist families struggling with rising living costs.
