The Nepalese government has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives aimed at amending the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Rights Act of 2018. The proposed legislation seeks to increase paid maternity leave from the current 98 days to six months. Additionally, paternity leave would be extended from 15 days to 42 days. These benefits would apply to employees across government, non-governmental, and private sectors. Officials state that this policy shift is a strategic response to the nation's slowing population growth rate, as indicated by recent census data. By providing longer periods of paid leave for both parents, the government hopes to create a more supportive environment for families, potentially encouraging higher birth rates across the country.
