Deepak KC, a disaster risk reduction specialist with the UNDP, has called for hydropower projects in Nepal to prioritize climate resilience throughout their lifecycle. Speaking at a recent forum, he emphasized that surveys, design, and construction must account for threats like glacial lake outbursts and flooding. He advocated for the use of advanced technology, including satellite radar, seismic sensors, and monitoring cameras, to enhance safety. Furthermore, KC proposed moving beyond individual project security to an integrated risk management approach covering entire river corridors. This strategy includes developing real-time data dashboards for rainfall and glacier monitoring, alongside cross-border cooperation for early warning systems. By linking flood mapping with financial management and insurance, Nepal can better protect its critical energy infrastructure while pursuing economic growth, ensuring that development remains sustainable despite the escalating challenges posed by climate change.
