Officials in New Delhi shuttered a prominent central park on Friday to prevent a demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party. The group is protesting recent updates to voter registration lists, which they claim have unfairly excluded millions of citizens and benefited the ruling party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Election Commission of India has formally rejected these accusations of bias. Tensions escalated after the founder of the movement, Abhijeet Dipke, called for a gathering following the detention of two associates who attempted to display the national flag at the Jantar Mantar protest site. Local police had previously revoked permission for demonstrations at that location. In response to the planned assembly, a significant number of security officers were positioned throughout the capital city to maintain order and enforce the closure of the park.
