Nirmala Paranavitana has officially assumed her role as Sri Lanka’s inaugural female Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. By presenting her credentials to Executive Secretary Claver Gatete in Addis Ababa, she has initiated a fresh chapter in diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and the African continent. This appointment is recognized as a significant milestone for female representation within the Sri Lankan diplomatic corps. During her initial meetings, Ambassador Paranavitana and the Executive Secretary explored avenues to enhance South-South cooperation, focusing on private sector growth, technological collaboration, and investment opportunities. Furthermore, the discussions highlighted specific projects, including a collaborative rice knowledge-sharing initiative involving Burundi and international partners, aimed at fostering practical and inclusive economic development across the region.
