A Sydney district court has sentenced 58-year-old Alexander Csergo to three years and six months in prison for reckless foreign interference. Csergo, a marketing executive who previously resided in Shanghai, was apprehended by Australian authorities in 2023. He was found guilty of accepting payments from Chinese intelligence operatives to produce detailed reports on sensitive subjects, including Australia's critical minerals sector and the AUKUS nuclear submarine agreement involving the United States and Britain. Following the sentencing, the head of Australia's intelligence agency, Mike Burgess, described foreign interference as a direct threat to the nation's sovereignty. Csergo will be eligible for parole starting next month.
