The Punjab prosecution department has formally requested the Supreme Court of Pakistan to reconsider the practice of running prison sentences concurrently. In a submission led by Additional Prosecutor General Tariq Siddique, the provincial government argued that for exceptionally brutal offenses—such as terrorism, sexual assault, kidnapping, and multiple homicides—sentences should be served consecutively. Officials contend that this approach would better align punishment with the severity of individual crimes, thereby strengthening public trust in the judicial system and enhancing the deterrent effect of legal penalties. A seven-member bench, presided over by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, is currently reviewing the legal implications of whether individuals convicted of multiple murders should face cumulative prison terms rather than concurrent ones to ensure that sentencing adequately reflects the gravity of their actions.
