Saima Wazed, the daughter of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has resigned from her position as the World Health Organization's regional director for Southeast Asia. Her departure follows a period of unpaid administrative leave initiated by the UN agency due to allegations of financial fraud, academic credential misrepresentation, and illegal land acquisition in Bangladesh. Wazed, who assumed the role in early 2024, has consistently denied these claims, attributing the financial discrepancies to administrative errors and defending her academic qualifications. In her resignation letter addressed to Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Wazed expressed a loss of confidence in WHO leadership, citing the prolonged suspension and lack of remuneration as reasons for her exit. Reports indicate the WHO was already preparing to remove her from the post, with plans to initiate a new election process for the regional leadership position early next year.
