Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat stated on September 8 that the schedule, construction techniques, and specific land usage for the proposed western island remain undecided. Responding to inquiries from 13 Members of Parliament, Chee emphasized that the initiative to consolidate islands such as Pulau Semakau, Bukom, and Sudong is a highly intricate and technically demanding undertaking. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong initially introduced the concept during the 2026 National Day Rally to address long-term national requirements regarding industrial capacity, energy infrastructure, and security. The government is currently evaluating the project's scope while acknowledging the ecological significance of the surrounding maritime environment. Officials intend to maintain ongoing consultations with relevant stakeholders as the planning process continues to evolve, ensuring that strategic needs are balanced against environmental considerations throughout the development phases.
