Tetsuya Chiba, a celebrated figure in the Japanese manga industry, has died at the age of 87, according to his publishers. Over a career spanning seventy years, Chiba gained widespread recognition for his iconic boxing series, Ashita no Joe, which depicted the journey of a troubled youth rising through the professional ranks. His body of work frequently explored the development of young athletes in disciplines such as golf, kendo, and boxing, while simultaneously capturing the complexities of daily life in postwar Japan, including themes of poverty and resilience. Beyond his creative output, Chiba served as the head of the Japan Cartoonists Association, taught at the university level, and was honored with the Order of Culture for his significant contributions to the arts. His influence remains a cultural touchstone, particularly noted by the public memorial held for his fictional protagonist, Joe.
