Acting Minister for Manpower Jasmin Lau emphasized that safeguarding employees from haze conditions is a mandatory responsibility for businesses. During an October 16 press briefing, Lau highlighted that the Workplace Safety and Health Act requires employers to implement reasonable measures to ensure staff well-being. Companies are advised to actively monitor air quality levels and adhere to official Ministry of Manpower guidelines. When the Pollutant Standards Index is projected to exceed 200, categorized as Very Unhealthy, organizations should restrict strenuous outdoor activities. Furthermore, employers are expected to take extra precautions for vulnerable staff members, such as pregnant employees and older workers, by minimizing their exposure to outdoor environments. These directives aim to ensure that workplace safety remains a priority during periods of poor air quality.
