Sri Lankan officials have formally requested European Union support to bolster the nation's small and medium-sized enterprises, startup environment, and export industries. This request was presented during a meeting between Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe and Pēteris Ustubs, a representative from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships. The discussions focused on leveraging the EU’s Global Gateway initiative, a massive funding program designed to mobilize approximately €300 billion worldwide. This capital is intended to support critical sectors such as renewable energy, digital technology, healthcare, and infrastructure. Deputy Minister Abeysinghe emphasized that integrating these investments is essential for upgrading local businesses to compete effectively in international markets.
