The Department of Wildlife and Forest Conservation has suspended visitor access to the first and second blocks of Yala National Park starting September 14. This closure is scheduled to last until October 15 to protect the park's diverse wildlife, which is currently suffering from the effects of extreme dry weather linked to El Niño. The lack of rainfall has caused significant depletion of natural water sources and vegetation, threatening the survival of numerous species including mammals, birds, and reptiles. To mitigate the impact of the drought, park authorities are actively pumping water from the Menik River into various locations within the reserve. This intervention aims to provide essential hydration for animals facing critical food and water shortages during this period of environmental stress.
