The Sri Lankan government has officially sanctioned a new round of bidding for the renovation of running tracks at the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex. The project involves replacing the 400, 200, and 80-meter artificial surfaces, with an initial budget set at approximately 1.06 billion rupees. Although the initiative previously gained cabinet approval in late 2025 and early 2026, the initial international procurement process failed to yield a viable result. Officials noted that the sole qualified applicant submitted a bid exceeding the project's estimated cost by 70 percent. Consequently, the high-level procurement committee advised canceling the previous tender to seek more competitive pricing. The cabinet's recent decision aims to secure a contractor capable of completing the necessary infrastructure upgrades at a more reasonable financial commitment.
