The Supreme Court of India recently clarified that the application of the "logical discrepancy" category during West Bengal's special intensive revision of electoral rolls is currently functioning only as a temporary measure. Justices noted that the legal validity of this practice remains under judicial review. The Election Commission has been issuing notices to millions of voters, requiring them to justify inconsistencies in their registration data, such as age gaps between parents and children, naming errors, or large family sizes. Furthermore, the court emphasized that its previous ruling regarding a similar exercise in Bihar does not serve as a binding precedent for the ongoing situation in West Bengal. The bench indicated that the final determination on whether these administrative actions are legally permissible is still pending.
