Mae Mali, recognized as the oldest hippopotamus in Thailand, marked her 61st birthday on September 8, 2026, at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo. The celebration featured a large cake constructed from her preferred snacks, including watermelon, dragon fruit, bananas, and various vegetables. Zoo personnel, local students, and numerous visitors gathered to sing birthday songs and participate in activities, such as an exhibition detailing her history and a station for writing well-wishes. Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi stated that the event aimed to honor the animal's longevity while promoting public awareness regarding wildlife conservation and hippopotamus biology. Mae Mali, a beloved figure among zoo patrons, originally arrived in the country from the Tilburg Zoo in the Netherlands.
