Turkish law enforcement officials conducted coordinated raids on Thursday, resulting in the detention of 59 people across three municipalities in Mersin province. Among those taken into custody were Mersin Metropolitan Mayor Vahap Seçer, who also leads the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, alongside Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer. The Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated these operations as part of a probe into alleged irregularities regarding public procurement processes. Authorities executed search warrants at the residences of the suspects during the early morning hours. The investigation specifically examines 13 tenders and 63 direct procurement transactions linked to the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, which are suspected of causing financial losses to the public sector. Notably, Tuncer had been removed from the Republican People’s Party earlier in September.
