Authorities in Istanbul have initiated legal proceedings to freeze the financial assets of Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, a former government minister, and her spouse, İlyas Kaya. This action follows an ongoing investigation into their alleged involvement in profiting from the nation's recent investment fund crisis. The financial turmoil, which began in mid-September, saw several investment funds fail to honor redemption requests, leading to significant volatility on the Istanbul stock exchange. Following these accusations, Kaya, who previously held a leadership role within the Justice and Development Party, stepped down from her party positions over the weekend. The prosecutor's office has formally notified relevant financial institutions to implement the asset freeze as the probe into the investment scandal continues.
