Umno has accused the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition of employing inconsistent principles regarding royal pardons. This accusation follows PH's recent assertion that individuals found guilty in significant corruption cases ought to complete their entire prison sentences. Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Umno's secretary-general, pointed out that PH had previously endorsed the full pardon granted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2018, even though he had not finished his five-year incarceration period. Dr Asyraf questioned the rationale for applying a different benchmark to other cases. He further suggested that PH's comments appeared to challenge the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's constitutional authority to grant pardons, a power enshrined in Article 42(1) of the Federal Constitution.
