The United Nations Human Rights Council has formally condemned the ongoing violence against civilians in Sudan, emphasizing that the conflict cannot be resolved through military means. During a session in Geneva, the council voted to extend the mandate of its international fact-finding mission, despite opposition from the Sudanese government. The resolution calls for an unconditional ceasefire and highlights the devastating impact of drone strikes and aerial bombardments on infrastructure and non-combatants. Recent reports indicate that a World Food Programme convoy was targeted in North Kordofan, resulting in a fatality. Since the conflict between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces erupted in April 2023, tens of thousands have perished and millions have been displaced. The council also expressed concern regarding foreign interference, illegal arms flows, and documented atrocities, including potential genocide in Darfur, while demanding accountability for attacks on humanitarian personnel.
