The United States government has engaged in a second round of discreet negotiations with representatives of Myanmar’s military leadership within the last thirty days. These discussions, held in Tokyo, signal a shift in Washington's diplomatic approach toward the junta. Since the military takeover in 2021, the United States had largely maintained a policy of avoiding direct contact with the regime. This recent series of meetings suggests that American officials are now actively seeking to reestablish communication channels with the generals currently governing Myanmar, marking a notable departure from the previous stance of isolation.
