The Uttar Pradesh administration has informed the Supreme Court of its intention to contest an Allahabad High Court ruling that mandated a ₹5 lakh compensation for law student Akriti Chaudhary. The High Court had previously declared her detention under the National Security Act illegal, ordering the fine to be deducted from the salary of the Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate, Medha Roopam. The court had criticized the administration for fabricating records and misusing preventive detention powers against a peaceful protester. Separately, the Supreme Court expressed strong disapproval regarding a notice issued to another student, Akshat Tripathi, for his alleged involvement in protests, despite prior judicial orders protecting demonstrators. The state government and the District Magistrate are expected to challenge the financial liability imposed by the High Court, which also suggested that officials must prioritize constitutional obligations over political pressures.
