The Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing in Uzbekistan has stated that the country faces no immediate threat from the plague. This announcement follows reports of a suspected case in Russia’s Irkutsk region, where a research institute employee died from pneumonia of unknown origin. While Russian authorities have placed nearly 200 individuals under observation, the World Health Organization currently assesses the risk of transmission in the European region as very low. Nurmat Atabekov, a senior official at the Uzbek Health Ministry, emphasized that the nation maintains robust preventative measures, including 53 sanitary control points at borders and specialized laboratories equipped for detecting dangerous infectious diseases. The government continues to monitor international developments closely to ensure public safety, noting that modern antibiotics remain effective for treatment if the disease is diagnosed early.
