The World Bank has approved a 100 million dollar loan to enhance the reliability and efficiency of Uzbekistan's power distribution infrastructure. Managed by the National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan, the initiative focuses on digitizing 60 substations to decrease energy waste and improve supply stability. The project also aims to bolster institutional operations, cybersecurity, and gender equality within the utility sector. By 2031, the upgrades are projected to save 20,000 megawatt-hours annually and facilitate the integration of 3.3 gigawatts of renewable energy, while cutting carbon emissions by 23,000 tonnes. This effort is co-financed with the Asian Development Bank, bringing total project funding to 371 million dollars. These improvements are essential for supporting the nation's goal of reaching 25 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and addressing the challenges posed by an aging, overloaded electrical grid.
