A recent World Bank assessment indicates that Uzbekistan has experienced a substantial decline in poverty, with rates dropping from 17% to 5.8% between 2021 and 2025. This progress, which lifted millions out of poverty, was primarily driven by increased employment and higher wages. Despite this, the report warns that economic gains are distributed unevenly, with the middle class expanding mostly in the Tashkent region. Furthermore, many new jobs remain informal and lack high productivity. The study also identifies significant barriers for women in the labor market, including limited access to childcare and a persistent gender pay gap. To sustain development, the World Bank recommends improving educational quality, enhancing social protection programs, and fostering better connectivity between remote areas and economic hubs to ensure more inclusive growth across the country.
