Transport and legal organizations are calling for the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to address the ongoing ghost rider issue within the motorcycle taxi industry. Ariel Inton, president of the Lawyers for Commuter Safety and Protection, emphasized that regulatory standards must be upheld consistently rather than ignored. During a recent forum in Quezon City, Inton argued that any necessary changes to existing transport policies should follow established legal procedures instead of bypassing current mandates. The controversy, which surfaced earlier this year during a period of rising fuel costs, involves discrepancies in rider lists associated with a government cash assistance program managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Advocates maintain that the DOTr's failure to resolve these irregularities undermines its regulatory authority and necessitates a formal investigation into compliance failures.
