The Chinese Embassy in Manila has challenged a proposal by Representative Terry Ridon to deport lower-ranking diplomats amid ongoing tensions regarding the West Philippine Sea. Ridon suggested the expulsion following remarks by Ambassador Jing Quan, who claimed China would prevail if force were used in the disputed waters. The Department of Foreign Affairs had previously summoned the ambassador to express formal objections to his statements. In response to growing calls from various lawmakers, including Senator Kiko Pangilinan, to declare the ambassador persona non grata, the Chinese mission issued defiant social media posts criticizing the language used by Philippine officials. While President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has previously declined to expel the ambassador, the diplomatic friction continues as both sides exchange sharp rhetoric over sovereignty and the conduct of foreign representatives in the country.
