The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) recently conducted a public hearing regarding a request from the Punjab Power Development Company Limited (PPDCL) to raise electricity rates. The company is seeking to increase the fixed charge for its hydroelectric projects in Chianwali, Marala, and Pakpattan from Rs7.4316 per kilowatt-hour to Rs10.9133 per kilowatt-hour. This proposed adjustment represents an increase of over Rs3 per unit. During the session, representatives from the Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee, the Multan Electric Power Company, and the Gujranwala Electric Power Company voiced strong opposition to the motion. These entities argued that such a tariff hike would ultimately lead to higher electricity costs for end-users and expressed significant concerns regarding the financial impact of the proposed revision on the broader power sector.
