Delhi authorities took YouTuber Dhruv Rathee into custody in Gurugram on Saturday. The detention occurred shortly before a scheduled demonstration at Jantar Mantar, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party and various student organizations. Participants in the protest intended to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing grievances regarding the Election Commission's management of electoral roll revisions. Rathee had traveled to the capital region on Friday specifically to join the event. In response to the police action, the Cockroach Janta Party issued a statement criticizing the government's approach toward dissenting youth. Recent weeks have seen similar protests across India as critics continue to voice concerns over the integrity and operational transparency of the national election body.
