Official data indicates that the ongoing Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in more than 4,000 fatalities. Authorities report approximately 8,300 confirmed infections spanning seven provinces, while over 2,000 individuals have successfully recovered from the illness. This crisis, triggered by the Bundibugyo virus, commenced in May and currently stands as the most severe outbreak in the nation's history. Globally, it is recognized as the second-largest occurrence of the virus, following the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic. Meanwhile, Médecins Sans Frontières has cautioned that the official death count may be an underestimation, citing ongoing security challenges in the affected regions that complicate data collection and healthcare delivery efforts.
