In Indonesian Borneo, a group of women is actively participating in firefighting efforts, defying established societal expectations. Traditionally, women in this region have been primarily responsible for domestic duties such as child-rearing, cooking, and maintaining the household. By taking on the physically demanding and dangerous role of combating fires, these individuals are challenging deep-seated gender stereotypes. Their involvement marks a significant shift in local dynamics, as they step outside the conventional boundaries that have historically limited their participation in public safety and emergency response sectors.
