The family of 16-year-old Lee Chae-won has voiced deep distress following a Gwangju District Court verdict that sentenced her murderer to life in prison. The victim's relatives had publicly advocated for the death penalty, arguing that the court's decision to impose a life sentence instead of capital punishment has caused them further trauma. The defendant, 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi, was convicted of all charges related to the incident, which occurred in May during an attempted sexual assault. While prosecutors had formally requested a death sentence for the perpetrator, the court opted for life imprisonment, leaving the victim's family dissatisfied with the judicial outcome.
