In 1936, African American activist and scholar W.E.B. Du Bois contributed an essay to the Mumbai-based publication The Aryan Path. Initially invited to discuss African American culture, Du Bois pivoted the focus toward fostering greater mutual understanding between Indians and Black Americans. In his piece, titled The Clash of Colour, he highlighted a significant barrier to solidarity: the profound ignorance each group held regarding the other's experiences and history. Du Bois argued that this lack of shared knowledge hindered the development of meaningful connections. His reflections, written nearly a century ago, remain relevant today as they address the complexities of identity and the challenges of building cross-cultural alliances. The article serves as a historical record of an attempt to bridge the gap between two marginalized groups through intellectual exchange and shared political consciousness.
