Hong Kong's National Security Department has formally charged a 52-year-old individual for allegedly disseminating seditious material online. The charges, filed under the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, follow an investigation into social media posts that authorities claim were intended to incite hatred against the central government in Beijing, the local administration, and the judiciary. Although the suspect was initially taken into custody nearly three months ago, the legal proceedings were only recently disclosed. The accused appeared before the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts this past Wednesday to address the allegations. Under the current legislation, known locally as Article 23, the offense carries a potential maximum prison sentence of seven years.
