A court in Hong Kong has found Dow Jones Publishing Co (Asia), the entity behind the Wall Street Journal, guilty of breaching local labor regulations. The conviction stems from the company's actions to prevent former reporter Selina Cheng from seeking the chairmanship of the Hong Kong Journalists Association. While the court ruled against the publisher regarding the union leadership bid, it dismissed a separate charge concerning the unlawful termination of Cheng's employment. The magistrate determined that her dismissal coincided with a significant organizational shift, as the newspaper moved its regional headquarters from Hong Kong to Singapore. Consequently, the court could not definitively link her firing to her union activities, citing the broader corporate restructuring as a plausible alternative explanation for the end of her contract.
