A devastating fire in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Bukavu has claimed the lives of at least 24 children. The blaze, which erupted shortly after the school day began, leveled two educational institutions and approximately 300 wooden homes. Provincial authorities reported that the deceased comprised 19 female and five male students, with nearly 30 additional individuals suffering injuries. While the fire was eventually brought under control, local medical staff suggest the number of fatalities could rise as more victims are treated. The city is currently held by the M23 rebel movement following their military advances last year. An official investigation into the cause of the disaster is now underway to determine how the fire started in the densely populated area.
