Scientists and volunteers from the University of Miami are actively working to restore Florida's coral reefs through the 'Rescue a Reef' initiative. By planting young coral and monitoring existing colonies, the team aims to identify specific species capable of surviving the rising ocean temperatures linked to climate change. Programme manager Devon Ledbetter noted that certain corals demonstrate a higher tolerance to thermal stress, allowing them to recover more effectively than others. Beyond conservation, the project serves to educate the public on the critical role these reefs play in supporting marine biodiversity and acting as natural barriers that protect coastlines from erosion and storm damage. This ongoing research is essential for developing long-term strategies to preserve fragile underwater ecosystems against the impacts of global warming.
