Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee announced the resignation of Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho, citing administrative failures linked to a catastrophic fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate. The incident, which occurred during renovation work in November last year, resulted in 168 fatalities and left more than 4,600 individuals without homes. An independent committee report released nearly one year after the tragedy prompted the leadership change. Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong is set to assume the role of acting housing minister while the government continues to manage resettlement efforts for those affected by the blaze. Survivors of the disaster had previously demanded official accountability, citing prior warnings regarding safety concerns at the site that were allegedly ignored by authorities.
