New York Governor recently signed legislation aimed at regulating how artificial intelligence chatbots interact with underage users. The new mandate requires companies to implement age verification processes for their platforms. Under these rules, AI interfaces are prohibited from generating content that might lead a minor to believe the software is a living human, possesses emotions, or holds a personal, professional, or authoritative relationship with the user. Furthermore, these chatbots cannot present their outputs as personal opinions. This regulatory move represents a significant effort to limit how consumer-facing AI models engage with children, though it has already encountered opposition from various segments of the technology sector concerned about the implications for service accessibility and operational requirements.
