The Indian government is launching a new international initiative to highlight its cultural influence through shared heritage. Culture secretary Vivek Aggarwal announced plans for joint UNESCO nominations, starting with the Chhath festival in collaboration with Mauritius. The strategy involves identifying historical connections, such as archaeological links with Oman and Bahrain, and shared traditions like shadow puppetry and textile practices across Southeast Asia. Additionally, the Archaeological Survey of India is actively involved in conservation projects in nations including Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. These efforts, falling under initiatives like Project Mausam and Project Brihattar Bharat, aim to formalize India's historical and civilizational ties with other countries. By pursuing collective recognition for intangible heritage and historical sites, the government seeks to leverage its long-standing cultural footprint as a key component of its modern diplomatic outreach.
