The Indian Ministry of Defence's annual report for the 2025-2026 fiscal year indicates that China has notably scaled back its military troop levels along the northern frontier. Despite this reduction, approximately ten combined arms brigades continue to maintain positions near the Line of Actual Control and designated training zones. Independent experts estimate that each of these brigades consists of roughly 5,000 personnel. This development follows a period of heightened friction that began in June 2020, triggered by a lethal confrontation in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. That incident resulted in casualties for both nations and prompted a massive buildup of troops and heavy weaponry by both sides. The current report highlights a shift in the status quo that has persisted since the 2020 border escalation.
