During a UN Security Council session, Iran’s representative Gholamhossein Darzi identified the United States as the primary source of maritime insecurity within the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran rejected Western accusations regarding navigation disruptions, asserting that the waterway remained secure until February 2026. According to the Iranian envoy, subsequent US military actions, including attacks on commercial vessels, the targeting of search and rescue ships, and the implementation of a naval blockade, constitute violations of international law and the UN Charter. Iran maintains that its own maritime activities are defensive measures taken to protect its sovereignty and national interests. The diplomat further highlighted the humanitarian consequences of the blockade, noting that it restricts civilian access to essential goods like food and medicine. Consequently, Iran has urged the Security Council to hold the United States accountable for these actions and to demand an immediate cessation of its military operations.
