The Royal Malaysian Air Force is currently developing a bare base in Bintulu, Sarawak, scheduled for completion by May 2028. This facility aims to address the strategic defense gap between the existing air hubs in Kuching and Labuan. Positioned near the South China Sea, the site provides proximity to contested maritime areas and critical energy infrastructure. While the project enhances surveillance and rapid deployment capabilities, analysts are debating whether fixed infrastructure is the most effective solution for the diverse security challenges facing East Malaysia. Unlike the conventional defense needs in Sarawak, the eastern coast of Sabah requires a different approach to manage cross-border threats such as piracy and smuggling, which are currently addressed by the Eastern Sabah Security Command. The Bintulu base is intended to function as a flexible node within a broader network of sensors and naval assets rather than a permanent, fully-staffed installation.
