TS Nandakumar, a 68-year-old mridangam performer, recounts his transition from Kerala to Mumbai in the late 1970s, where he built a significant career within the city's vibrant classical music scene. Known as "Bombay" Nandakumar, he performed alongside renowned artists such as Bhimsen Joshi and M Balamuralikrishna. In 2008, he relocated to the United States, facing initial professional and personal challenges, including a nine-year period living apart from his family while traveling extensively to teach and perform. Throughout his career, Nandakumar has maintained a philosophy that artistic excellence naturally attracts opportunities and connections.
